Pink Hair and Baby food

February 28, 2016

We promised Sky ages ago that if she could stop chewing on her hair, we would let her get pink stripes in it.  She's finally conquered her habit and earned her stripes.  My cousin's wife's sister (hurray for living near family again!) does hair and came down to our house to put them in for Sky.
They are bright but still subtle- the perfect surprising touch for a 6-year-old.  Sky didn't love having to sit for so long to get them done but did enjoy all the attention that she got when she went to school with them for the first time.

Sky's 5th Family Day

February 25, 2016

I can't believe it's been five years since this sparky girl joined our family!  We are so lucky to have her as our daughter.  It's been amazing to see her grow into herself, especially since she started kindergarten this year.  Sky is doing great in her new school, loves her teacher and is making some good friends.  Her gymnastics coaches have nothing but good things to say about her and are ready to move her up to the next age group when the summer season starts.  Sky is still an amazing big sister and although we're still working on how to deal with little brothers when they're annoying, she loves playing with Earth, will carry Water wherever he wants to go, and she and Fire still sleep together most nights.

Here's a look back at how she's grown in the last five years:

CSA Cooking #5 and 6: Two for One, With Warm Green Salads

February 24, 2016

Last week was a doozy for us- Sky and Fire both had the flu and having sick kids at home meant that I just didn't have the time or the energy to do the kind of cooking that I have been.  Happily, all the greens were so fresh that they were good until I had time to cook them this week.  My CSA share from week 5 was pinto beans, onions, navel oranges, arugula, braising mix, chinese cabbage, and hakurei turnips and the share from week 6 was  arugula, cilantro, chinese cabbage, hakurei turnips, navel oranges, salad mix, toscano kale, and red potatoes.

High Five for Friday #33: Date Night!

February 19, 2016

High five, friends, it's Friday!  Our week was super for a few reasons, the biggest of which was that we seem to have shaken the flu.  Sky and Fire are back at school and life is moving forward in our home again.  Here's some highlights from our week:

Birthday Fever

February 15, 2016

We've had birthday fever here- and not the good kind!  Fire turned four last week but was sick with the flu for every party we threw for him.  He slept through the family party

CSA Cooking #4: Greens, Beans, and Cauliflower

February 11, 2016

I'll be honest with you, the excitement of cooking with greens every week has worn off.  That's not to say that I'm not up to the challenge but it is getting a little harder to come up with new and different ways to use them in recipes that my family will enjoy.  Happily, the share this week included black beans and cauliflower, which helped mix things up a little bit.  Our share also included arugula, braising mix, i’itoi onions, oranges , quelites, salad mix.

A Day with the Boys

February 10, 2016

I finally get to do a "Day in the Life" post!  Because I've always worked full-time (outside the home- believe me, this SAHM gig is time and a half!), I've never been able to write one.  I had all three boys home with me yesterday since Fire was home with a fever. He can be a handful these days but we ended up having a great day all around.
Since Sky's bus comes a little after 7, I got her up at 6 and helped her get ready for the day.  She and I were able to have a whole hour to ourselves and even had breakfast together which was a nice treat.  I knew I wasn't going to have any time to myself during the day so I squeezed my shower in before she left, while the boys were still asleep.  Then it was off to the races!

Before and After: Backyard Remodel

February 8, 2016

Our first remodeling project at the new house is finished!  We started with the back because we knew we would need a kid-friendly space for the kids while we worked on the remodeling inside the house.  The whole project was finished in a week and we love the way it turned out.

Five for Friday #32: Favorites of the Week

February 5, 2016

Happy Friday, friends!  How was your week?  Ours was a little rocky in the middle (D was gone for work for two days) but great overall and we're all looking forward to the weekend. It's a bit of a random list but here are a few of my favorite things from this week:

#1
I found this shelf for half off at World Market and it fits perfectly in the kids bathroom. I missed having nice things while we lived on Kwaj and it feels really good to find things that are both useful and artful for our new house.

CSA Cooking #3 : More Winter Greens

February 3, 2016

Our CSA share last week was all about the greens: Oranges, Red Potatoes, Quelites (we got two bunches, since I traded our pecans for a second one), Rapini, Chinese Cabbage, Braising Mix, and Salad Mix.  This one took a lot of brainstorming because although my kids are pretty good eaters, asking them to eat greens straight every single night would have ended in fights.
